| Individuals adopt for a variety of reasons, including infertility, death of a child's natural parent, remarriage, and teen pregnancy, among others. Family adoptions, including those by stepparents and grandparents, are increasingly common. It is not unusual for an uninvolved biological parent to relinquish parental rights when the other parent remarries or another family member is willing to permanently care for the child. Whether the biological parent has financially supported the child or not, once adoption occurs, an obligation for child support no longer exists. For this reason, a biological parent may surrender parental in exchange for a waiver of past and future child support. When both biological parents consent to adoption, adopting a child may be as simple as filing the appropriate paperwork with the court and having a judge approve it. Once the adoption occurs, the child becomes capable of inheriting from the adopted parent and is legally recognized as that parent's child. Whatever your reason for wanting to adopt, The Law Office of Julie Ernst-Fortin, PC can answer your questions and help you through the process efficiently and economically.
